abstract

The knowledge of color and form in the buildings of the Islamic city is the knowledge of thought and culture and shows the prevailing wisdom of a period. The color in the buildings of the Islamic city depends on the theoretical foundations of its design and construction and includes the principles, rules and criteria that have originated from Islamic texts. Of course, how to respond to the criteria inserted in time and place will be different; But what remains unchanged are Islamic principles and concepts.

The purpose of this study is to find the theoretical foundations and worldview of the Muslim artist in using color in the murals of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque as an important and significant example of the buildings of one of the Islamic cities. Since the principles and tradition of building in Islamic cities are derived from the religious worldview, to study the color of its narrations in the primary sources of Islam such as the Qur’an and Versions and secondary sources such as: spiritual treatises on professions and the idea of ​​unity in its mystical foundations It is referred to with an analytical and descriptive approach to try to determine how the message traditions are related to objective examples in murals.

These researches show that the idea of the Muslim artist in using colors in the murals of the Islamic city is rooted in the theoretical and theological principles derived from the principles of Islam in its sources, including the Qur’an and the theological sources of Muslim mystics. Therefore, in order to recognize color in the architecture of an Islamic city, one must return to the worldview of the Muslim artist and the intellectual resources of the society in which the works of Islamic art have been formed.
